Up Up: Eyes Open (Let's Go Birding in Bovina)

This is a collage of the ten most common birds in our area. You may not be able to name them all now, but maybe you will after this event.

(This event has concluded. Thank you everyone for making it such a fun success!)

Fall migration is underway! The Farm at Russell Hill is a perfect place to get to know the avian residents and visitors of the Northeastern flyway. We’ll learn about birds, birding and the local habitat over coffee, explore the edges of ponds, streams, fields and woods for birds and other wildlife, and end with a gourmet picnic lunch from Brushland Eating House while we take in the beautiful views of Bovina's valleys.

For the birding-curious, as well as the birding-pro, this is a fun way to spend a morning as part of an upstate weekend escape. (If you need help planning your trip let us know and we can recommend nearby accommodations, restaurants, and things to do.)

The event will be lead by Whitney Mortimer who watches and studies birds on every continent. Hailing from New York, she now lives in Northern California where she leads bird walks in local parks. In 2014 Whitney was designated a "Master Birder" by the California Academy of Science and Golden Gate Audubon Society. When not chasing birds in the Amazon or Antarctica, you will find her working in a design studio on the San Francisco Bay, where she has identified 38 species of birds from her little desk.

When
Saturday September 9, 2017
9am - 1pm

Where
The Farm at Russell Hill
Bovina, NY

Tickets
Includes lunch, notebook, and special birding patch.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Bovina Historical Society.

Come join us – it'll be a hoot! (Sorry, too corny?) (P.S. There are very few owls in Bovina.)

Gear & Equipment
The hike will go through grassy, forested and muddy areas. We recommend wearing long pants, to avoid any scratchy or thorny plants. And waterproof/rubber boots help you from getting too muddy. (We wear these boots ourselves.)

Binoculars are not required, but they help. If you have a pair, bring them along. If you're considering purchasing some, let us know and we can offer recommendations.

If you have any questions just use the contact form.

Like the birds, the event will happen rain or shine.

And for a little more about the joys of birding, take a look at the post "Birding isn't just about birds" on our Lazy Homesteading blog.
